Systems Architect

Job description

At UpCloud you’ll be literally building the cloud.

Sometimes, cloud technologies can be offered as a patchwork of ready-made solutions. At UpCloud, however, you'll be working with something that we've built from the ground up. You'll know exactly what you're dealing with and you'll have an impact on how to make it even better. You'll find yourself in an environment where fresh ideas and technical discussions are encouraged and a flat hierarchy is valued.

Our existing infrastructure relies on open-source Linux tools and in-house automation built with Go, Python & Perl with a heavy emphasis on moving towards a distributed microservices architecture.

We are looking for a Systems Architect to join a team of infrastructure wizards in a growing and innovative cloud company. Your position would be to focus on the following:

  • Qualify and build new features/products and their server environments together with our development teams, and make sure different operational requirements and best practices are in place.

  • Research and build solutions for IT Operations preferably using open source technologies.

  • Handle daily operational tasks together with the rest of the operations team keeping production running. Focusing more on the software side of things, automation and monitoring.

  • Plan and execute update/feature rollouts with minimal impact on production

  • Be part of the On-call ring

Job requirements

Our view is that to be successful in this role you should have experience working with large-scale automation, provisioning, and building system-level solutions based on open-source components running on Linux OS. It of course doesn't hurt to have some exposure to the wide array of cloud technologies and public cloud providers. In essence, we expect you to have experience and interest in several of the following domains:

  • Linux server administration and virtualization

  • Security oriented mindset

  • Good problem solving skills and ability to comprehend complex environments

  • Scripting skills with eq. bash/python

  • Experience with designing and implementing monitoring

  • Database knowledge. Usage/server applications/high availability and tuning (MySQL/Postgresql)

  • Good understanding and hands on experience of basics of the internet and relevant server side applications (DNS, HTTP etc.)

  • Network technologies (TCP/IP, LB's etc.), storage systems, automation and version control (ansible, git) and container services

  • Basic knowledge of server/networking hardware and Data Centers

  • Documentation skills

At UpCloud we'll provide you with an easy-going environment that promotes work-life balance and self-development. You'll be encouraged to experiment, fail, learn, succeed amazingly, be brave to propose new things, agree and disagree.

This role can be performed from our office in the heart of Helsinki or remotely in Europe. If you're living outside Europe and you would want to relocate to Helsinki, you are welcome to apply too.
